Cut, Needle & Puncture-Resistant Gloves
Three different threats, three different ratings — and a high cut score won’t stop a hypodermic needle. Here’s how to match the glove to what your hands actually face.
“Cut-resistant,” “puncture-resistant,” and “needle-resistant” get used interchangeably in product listings, but they protect against different things and are measured by different standards. Buying the wrong one is how an officer doing a pat-down still gets stuck, or a recycling-line worker still gets sliced. This guide breaks down the three threat types, the standards that actually mean something, and which BAC glove fits each job.
The three threats, and how they’re rated

The mistake almost everyone makes: assuming a high cut rating means needle protection. It doesn’t. A hypodermic needle is fine enough to slip between the fibres that stop a blade — gloves rated ANSI A9 or EN cut F can still be defeated by a needle. Needle protection is its own property, measured by ASTM F2878. If needle-stick is your risk, the cut number on the box is beside the point: look for the needle rating.

Pat-downs and cell searches mean concealed blades and hidden needles. You need cut and needle resistance in the palm and fingertips, with enough dexterity to search effectively.
Healthcare & EMS
Sharps, agitated patients, improvised weapons. Needle-stick protection is the priority, backed by cut resistance for handling.
Waste & recycling
Unknown contents — glass, metal, discarded sharps. Cut and needle resistance together, in a glove durable enough to survive repeated handling.

How to read a cut rating
Two scales dominate. EN 388:2016 uses the ISO 13997 test and grades cut resistance A through F, with F the highest (≥30 newtons of blade load). ANSI/ISEA 105 — the North American standard, updated in 2024 — grades cut A1 through A9, A9 highest. EN cut F lands at roughly ANSI A6. For most blade-handling work, ANSI A4–A6 (EN cut D–F) is the practical range; for known knife threats, go higher.
